Zapusty – that’s the traditional polish name for the period of carnival. In Poland it is the time between Christmas and Lent( the time of waiting for Resurrection of Jesus). It is exceptional time in Poland, time of innumerable parties and great balls celebrating recent birth of baby Jesus.

Unlike in UK the Poles celebrate long after Christmas also keeping the Tree for a bit longer (until the end of January despite it is sometimes considered as bad luck in Britain ) thus it often becomes a silent witness of the fun time. The length of carnival depends on the time of Easter in Catholic Church. It ends up with start of the Lent and this year it will be on the 8th of March. Carnival in Poland is also the time for “studniówka” balls. Those sublime, posh parties enriched with beautiful costumes are organized a hundred days before “matura” ,an exam that crowns high school education and opens the way to universities for young people. Last seven days of carnival are joyful and full of good food. The week starts with “the greasy Thursday” , and total and unfinished gluttony is allowed on this day. The menu Is dominated by fat and sweet treats such as racuchy(kind of pancakes served with jam, cream or fruits), faworki (crusty, fragile but also deep fried in oil delicacy), and of course doughnuts.
