Science and technology journalist Peter Nowak argues that most of the major technological advances of the last 60 years have stemmed from the trio of billion-dollar industries that cater to our basest impulses: war, porn and fast food.

Rachel Hewitt - Mapping the Nation - Watershed, 8 November 2010, 19.30-20.30

Rachel Hewitt's first book, Map of a Nation, already an award-winner, tells the story of the creation of the Ordnance Survey map – one of political revolutions, rebellions, and regional unions that altered the shape and identity of the United Kingdom over the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Harry Ricketts - Strange Meetings: The Poets of the Great War - Watershed, 2 December 2010, 18.00-19.00

In association with Bristol Institute of Public Affairs

The cultural impact of the Great War continues to be felt, especially in poetry. Harry Ricketts, author of Strange Meetings, looks at the actual encounters, or near-encounters between the war poets and the influence they had on each other, including Sassoon, Rupert Brooke, Wilfred Owen, Edward Thomas, Ivor Gurney, David Jones, Vera Brittain and Roland Leighton, Robert Graves, Isaac Rosenberg (born in Bristol), Robert Nicols and Edmund Blunden.

Robin Ince - Robin Ince's Bad Book Club: One Man's Quest to Uncover the Books That Taste Forgot - Watershed, 2 December 2010, 19.30-20.30

Award winning comedian and writer, Robin Ince, hailed by the Observer as 'the outstanding literary event of the Edinburgh Festival', has spent most of the 21st century trying to answer the question 'is hideous prose and ghastly poetry more fabulous than great literature?' His Book Club is a manual – almost a life guide – training you up for membership of the Grand Order of Curators of Books That Should Never Have Been. Join the club in what promises to be a fantastically fun evening.
