Are you interested in how local government works and how much Councillors are paid? If so, you might want to apply to sit on an Independent Remuneration Panel.

Ipswich Borough Council is seeking to recruit three people living in the town to provide advice on allowances. The Council must take into account these views when reviewing or amending its remuneration scheme. It all adds up to more accountability and local decision-making.

Although some knowledge of local government would be an advantage, it is not essential as panel members receive comprehensive support from Council officers. More importantly, members should be able to approach issues with an open mind and ask relevant questions.

To be considered for a position on the panel, you will need to demonstrate integrity and probity; to be able to analyse information and reach conclusions for consideration by the Council; and either live or work in Ipswich.

You must not be politically active or have any relationship with Councillors or the Council and any of its employees.

The panel will be required to meet to review the current scheme and make proposals for the Council to consider before 31st March 2012. The panel will probably need to meet between three and four times during this time and then annually.

The panel will comprise three independent members who will then nominate one of their number as a chair. The term of office will be two years.

An expenses allowance of £330 a year will be payable to successful applicants upon completion of each review.

To find out more about this vacancy, please ring Stephen McGrath on 01473 432041 or e-mail him at [email protected].

Alternatively, you can apply for this post by completing the application form and sending it to Stephen McGrath, Operations Manager (Democratic Services), Ipswich Borough Council, 4th Floor East, Grafton House, 15-17 Russell Road, Ipswich, IP1 2DE.

Closing date for applications is Friday 28th October 2011.
