The man threatened staff at two shops in the town. The first occurred just after 7pm and the second two hours later at 9pm.
In each case the man brandished a knife and threatened workers at the shops. He escaped with an overall haul including cash, cigarettes and alcohol.
A Suffolk police spokesman said the first incident happened at Emeny News in St Helen’s Street.
The suspect walked into the shop at just after 7pm and, waving the knife, made threats. He took money before fleeing.
Then two hours later at just after 9pm he entered Unishop in Grimwade Street and made similar threats.
He ran off with cash, cigarettes, bottles of alcohol and a mobile phone.
In each case staff have been able to supply officers with descriptions.
The spokesman said: “We think it is the same person at this stage. The descriptions are a little bit different.
“No arrests have been made yet.”
Officers were still dealing with the incident late into the night and are expected to release more details today including a full description of the suspect.
No one was hurt in the robberies.
Police are keen to speak to anyone who was in St Helen’s Street or Grimwade Street at the time of the robberies.
