PARKING charges are set to be slashed at a popular town centre car park in a bid to boost tourism and shopping.
Ipswich Borough Council’s executive is next week expected to vote on proposals to cut the fees at the short-stay Crown surface car park.
The move would see prices cut from £1.70 to £1.40 per hour as part of a six-month trial starting in January.
Councillor Phil Smart, portfolio holder for transport, said: “We know that retailers can do with all the help we can give them and we also want shoppers’ money to go that little bit further.
“Crown car park as 230 spaces and is right next to all the major stores, the Museum and Ipswich Art School Gallery and Crown Pools.
“With 50p off two-hour parking (just 2.50) and four hours for just a fiver this makes Crown much cheaper than neighbouring car parks.”
The executive report is also recommending that charges at the council’s Waterfront car parks remain the same and that all-day parking in Portman Road and Ipswich Village rises by 10p a day.
Cllr Smart added: “It pays to shop around for cheaper parking and it is a myth that Ipswich is expensive to park in - certainly not at Crown and at council long-stay car parks.”
